From the airport, drive directly to Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. Your first stop is the Dambulla Cave Temple — a UNESCO site of extraordinary craft, where five cave shrines house over 150 Buddha statues and 1,500 square metres of ancient fresco. The summer light filters into the caves in the late afternoon.
By early evening, arrive at Sigiriya — the great rock fortress rises above the surrounding tree canopy, its fifth century citadel one of the most recognisable sights in Asia. Tomorrow, you climb.
The ascent of Sigiriya Rock at first light: through the water gardens, past the frescoed galleries, through the Lion's Gate and up to the summit palace with its view of the entire northern plain. The scale of the ancient engineering is most apparent from the top.
In the afternoon, Minneriya National Park — where during the summer dry season large herds of elephant converge around the ancient reservoir in one of Asia's greatest wildlife spectacles. The numbers can reach several hundred; the late afternoon light is extraordinary.
Drive east to Pasikudha — a sheltered bay on Sri Lanka's east coast, its waters calm and clear, its beaches wide and uncrowded. The east coast is at its best in the summer months when the west is rainy, and Pasikudha offers days of genuine beach escape: swimming in the bay, snorkelling over the coral, fresh seafood and slow afternoons. Two nights of exactly this.
A full day on the east coast — one of Sri Lanka's finest summer destinations. The waters of Pasikudha Bay are gentle enough for swimming at any time of day; the reef beyond the bay is rich enough for snorkelling; the beach road is quiet enough for a long walk in the morning. Lunch at the hotel, an afternoon in the water, a sunset dinner with the bay in front of you.
Drive inland and up into the hills to Kandy — the last royal capital of Sri Lanka and the island's spiritual heart. Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in the late afternoon, when the crowds have thinned and the rituals feel most intimate. A walk around the lake as the light fades, dinner in the city, and the cool highland air of an evening above sea level.
The morning train from Kandy to Ella is one of the world's most celebrated railway journeys. The carriages cross Victorian viaducts above cloud-filled valleys, wind through miles of tea estate and descend to the southern hills in a sequence of views that no camera quite captures and no traveller forgets. Arrive at Ella in the afternoon, walk to Little Adam's Peak for the sunset, and dinner at one of the town's excellent restaurants.
Drive south to Yala — Sri Lanka's most celebrated national park. An afternoon game drive through the dry zone scrub: the probability of leopard is higher here than almost anywhere in the world, and the elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and extraordinary birdlife provide a remarkable supporting cast. The light in Yala on a summer afternoon is magnificent.
Drive west along the coast to Galle — the UNESCO-listed Dutch fortress of coral stone and cobbled streets. Check in to your Fort hotel and spend the afternoon exploring: the ramparts, the old churches, the merchants' villas now housing the finest boutiques and restaurants in southern Sri Lanka. Dinner with the Indian Ocean in view from the fort walls.
A final full day on the southern coast. Morning at the Fort, afternoon options on the coast: the stilt fishermen at Koggala, the sea turtle hatcheries at Habaraduwa, or simply the beach at Unawatuna, a short drive from the Fort. Dinner at the best table in Galle and a final evening of Sri Lankan warmth before tomorrow's journey home.
After a final morning in Galle Fort — a last walk on the ramparts, a coffee at a Fort café — your private transfer joins the southern expressway north to Bandaranaike International Airport.
