Day One

Arrival at The Walawwa

30 min from Airport

From the airport, a short drive brings you to The Walawwa in Negombo — a meticulously restored colonial manor of the eighteenth century, set in tropical gardens with a pool and a quiet grace entirely its own. This is Sri Lanka at its most refined: a gentle arrival before nineteen days of considered discovery begin in earnest.

Day Two

Water Garden Sigiriya

3.5 hours' drive

Drive north to Sigiriya — the UNESCO rock fortress and ancient royal citadel that forms the centrepiece of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. Your property, Water Garden Sigiriya, is one of the finest boutique hotels in the country: an elegantly designed garden resort with sweeping views of the rock. Arrive in time to see the late afternoon light transform the limestone face above you.

Day Three

Sigiriya: The Ascent

Rise at dawn and ascend Sigiriya Rock before the heat arrives. The fifth century royal citadel reveals itself in stages: the water gardens, the fresco galleries, the mirror wall inscribed with medieval poetry, the Lion's Gate, the summit plateau and its incomparable view. The afternoon is yours at the hotel — the pool, the spa, or a bicycle ride through the surrounding village paths.

04
Day Four

Anuradhapura & Polonnaruwa

Continue to Kandy: 2.5 hrs

A full day of ancient kingdoms. Morning at Anuradhapura — the greatest of Sri Lanka's ancient capitals, its sacred city spread across a vast landscape of stupas, reservoirs and forest. Afternoon at Polonnaruwa — the medieval city of elaborately carved stone, monastic complexes and the serene Gal Vihara rock temple. Two civilisations in a single day; both require time, and your private guide knows how to pace them.

Day Five

Kandy: Kings Pavilion

Kings Pavilion is the finest address in Kandy: a hilltop property of colonial elegance with panoramic views over the city and its lake. Today is for the city itself: the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the old market, the Kandy National Museum, and an afternoon walk around the lake as the city settles into evening.

Day Six

Kandy: The Three Temple Loop

By tuk tuk through the village roads: the twelfth century Gadaladeniya temple, the Lankatilaka shrine on its rocky outcrop, and Embekka with its extraordinary carved wooden pillars. Between the temples, a working spice garden and a hilltop view of the Kandyan countryside. A deeply local journey through the living culture that surrounds the city.

Day Seven

Nuwara Eliya: Goatfell

2.5 hours' drive

The road climbs into the cloud. Nuwara Eliya rises at over 1,800 metres and your accommodation — the Goatfell Tea Bungalow — is set directly on the estate, surrounded by manicured tea rows and highland views. An afternoon walk through the plantation with the estate superintendent, tea tasting in the factory, then a long dinner in the bungalow as the highland night cools around you.

Day Eight

Nuwara Eliya: Moon Plains

A gentle morning walk to Moon Plains — a highland grassland plateau with sweeping views across the central hills, the tea country falling away in every direction. An optional excursion to Horton Plains National Park for those who wish to walk the trail to World's End and Baker's Falls. The afternoon is yours at the bungalow.

Day Nine

Nine Skies Ella

Scenic train journey

The train from Nuwara Eliya descends through the tea hills — one of the world's great rail journeys — arriving at Ella in the late afternoon. Nine Skies is perhaps the most celebrated boutique hotel in the hill country: a cluster of mountain villas above Ella's famous gap, where the valleys fall away to the south coast horizon. This evening, simply watch the sky change.

Day Ten

Ella: Walking the Ridge

Ella Rock at dawn, for those who want the climb: through forest and tea to a summit with one of the finest views in Sri Lanka. Alternatively, the Nine Arch Bridge walk and Little Adam's Peak, two classic routes through the surrounding countryside. The afternoon is entirely at leisure at Nine Skies — one of those properties where staying put is itself the experience.

Day Eleven

Chena Huts Yala

3.5 hours' drive from Ella

Drive south to Yala and Chena Huts — the most distinctive luxury camp in the park: a collection of open-sided tented villas in the scrubland above the ocean. Arrive in time for an afternoon game drive and the extraordinary quality of the late light in the dry zone. Leopard, elephant, sloth bear: Yala offers no guarantees but sets the terms for exceptional wildlife encounters.

Day Twelve

Yala: Dawn Drive

The park at first light, when the nocturnal animals have not yet retreated and the diurnal ones are waking. Your tracker and guide read the bush for signs — pug marks, alarm calls, movement in the long grass. Return to the camp for breakfast and a morning at leisure: the infinity pool above the Indian Ocean at Chena Huts is, justifiably, celebrated.

Day Thirteen

The Fort Printers, Galle

2 hours' drive

Drive west along the southern coast to Galle Fort — the UNESCO-listed Dutch colonial fortress of coral stone and cobbled streets. The Fort Printers is the finest address within the fort walls: a restored merchant villa of the colonial era, its rooms looking over the fort's garden and the Indian Ocean beyond the ramparts. Arrive and settle in before an evening walk on the ramparts at sunset.

Galle: Inside the Fort

A day within the fort: the Dutch Reformed Church, the National Museum, the rampart walls, the galleries and restaurants that have made Galle Fort one of the finest small towns in Asia. Lunch at one of the celebrated Fort restaurants. An afternoon browsing the independent shops on Church Street and Pedlar Street — handmade jewellery, antiquarian books, fine batik — before a sundowner on the ramparts.
